Two-step verification with an authenticator app
Two-step verification adds a second step to logging in. After your password (or Google), SimplShare asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone. A stolen password alone is then not enough to get into your account.
Turn it on
- Install an authenticator app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy or 1Password.
- In SimplShare, open Settings › Personal › Security, enter your password and choose Set up two-step verification.
- In the app, add a new account and scan the QR code on the page. If you can not scan it, choose to enter a key and type the key shown below the code. On a phone you can also tap the link.
- Type the 6-digit code the app shows and choose Turn on.
- Save your recovery codes. You get 10 one-time codes, shown only once. Keep them somewhere safe and separate from your phone, such as a password manager.
Logging in
Log in as usual. SimplShare then asks for a code. Enter the 6-digit code from your app, or one recovery code. The app's code changes every 30 seconds, and each code works once. This applies to every way of logging in: password, Google, and the links in our emails.
Recovery codes
- Each recovery code works one time. Using one logs you in and you are emailed so you know it was used.
- When you are running low, go to Settings › Personal › Security and choose Make new recovery codes (you will enter a code from your app). The old codes stop working at once.
- Do not store them only on the phone that has your authenticator app, because if you lose that phone you lose both.
New phone
While you can still log in, turn two-step verification off (Settings › Personal › Security › Turn off, which asks for your password and a code) and set it up again on the new phone. Many apps can also move your accounts to a new phone for you. Check your app's help before you wipe the old phone.
Lost your phone and your recovery codes?
We can reset two-step verification for you. See I lost my phone and my recovery codes.
Organizations
On the Business and Enterprise plans, an owner or co-owner can require two-step verification for everyone in the organization, under Organization › Policies › Security. People then have to turn it on before they can keep using SimplShare, and they can not turn it off while it is required.
