Encrypt a folder (Business and Enterprise)
Choose Encrypt from a folder's gear menu, or from the ... menu when you are inside the folder. Everything in the folder and the folders inside it is stored encrypted on the server, and so is anything you add later. Files already in the folder are encrypted at once.
- You and your visitors see no difference. Previews, downloads, share links, comments and zip downloads work as before. The file is decrypted on its way to someone who is allowed to see it.
- Moving things: a file moved or copied into an encrypted folder is encrypted. Moved or copied out, it is stored normally again. The Trash and saved versions keep a file as it was.
- Turning it off decrypts everything in the folder. A folder inside an encrypted folder is encrypted too; turn it off on the folder where you turned it on.
- What it protects: the files on the server's disk and in its backups. It is not end-to-end encryption: the SimplShare server can still read the files, because it decrypts them to show them.
If the option is greyed out with "Not set up", the site owner has not added an encryption key yet. If it shows a plan name, upgrade under Settings › Billing.
